Een zijpaadje. De nieuwe Mediacare-wet is aangenomen in het Congres. Maar denk niet dat elk congreslid zijn stem zonder druk van buitenaf kan geven. Robert Novak, de conservatieve commentator en een panellid van het CNN-programma Crossfire, vertelt over een aantal schrijnende voorbeelden, waarin Republikeinen onder druk worden gezet door hun eigen partij en lobbyisten:
ROBERT NOVAK, CO-HOST, "CROSSFIRE": There are such hard feelings left over from that all-night session, where they really put a lot of heat on Republicans to vote for the bill on conservatives. Congressman Nick Smith of Michigan, who is retiring, was told that business interests would pay his son $100,000 in campaign contributions if he voted for the bill. His son is running for Congress. When Nick refused to, then they turned around and said, we are going to defeat your son unless you vote yes. Tom Feeney of Florida […] was the speaker in the vote recount in 2000, considered the most likely freshman to succeed. He was told if he voted no on this bill, his entrance into the leadership would be delayed for at least three years. He voted no. Both of them voted no. But enough Republicans had their arms twisted yes to pass the bill.
