Het Democratische partij-establishment is tevreden met John Kerry als nieuwe koploper. Ze vonden Howard Dean maar niets: hij gaf af op het partij-establishment (verdomd, dat waren zij zelf) en boorde zomaar ongevraagd een hele nieuwe basis van Democratische stemmers aan. En het moest anders, en daar zit het establishment niet op te wachten, op anders.
Maar enige zorg is er toch. Kerry is dan wel een bekende naam in Washington DC, maar nog niet iin het hele land. En Kerry heeft nu wel leuk momentum, maar houdt hij dat vast? Dus in het reservebankje van de Democratische kopstukken zit John Edwards. Ook een braaf lid van de Washingtonse kliek, net als Kerry, dus dat komt dan wel goed. Senator Evan Bayh van Indiana verwoordde het gevoel als volgt: "To the extent to which there is an establishment, it wants what the Democratic primary voters want: the strongest candidate in the fall. I think the consensus is that John will be a more formidable candidate than Howard." Ik dnek dat de consensus een handje is geholpen om de aandacht van Dean naar Kerry verschoven te krijgen. Maar dat is de partijbonzen wel toevertrouwd.
Bayh’s zorg over Kerry is ook die van de hele groep: "I think he forcefully has to address the stereotype that his opponents will try to put on him: that he is, quote-unquote, a Massachusetts liberal."
