Howard Dean is het slachtoffer van zijn eigen succes. Dat vindt althans de Washington Post. Hij was al zo vroeg de koploper dat de media niets anders konden doen dan hem uitgebreid volgen en elke woord dat hij sprak op een weegschaaltje leggen. Dat heeft hem uiteindelijk de das om gedaan. Ook al is John Kerry nu de koploper, Dean blijft het verhaal. Hij definieerde de Democratische campagne.
Maar men is het er niet over eens of Dean nu gemaakt en gebroken is door de media. Historicus David Greenberg van Yale University vindt van wel: "Without question, the Washington media descended unfairly on Dean -- both because he was the front-runner and because he's leading a movement that's hostile to their insider culture. They turned the 'scream' from an amusing if slightly weird sidelight into a four-day front-page story that may seriously damage his chances." Maar de Nichlas Lemann, decaan van de journalistiekopleiding van Columbia University vindt van niet: "I'm not buying into the notion that the media made him and the media destroyed him, all before a single vote was cast. Actual phenomena happened in the world that made him a story, rather than the press." Dean vindt het vooral buiten proportie dat zijn speech na Iowa "673 times in one week" werd uitgezonden. Die aandacht kwam omdat hij inmiddels het imago had gekregen dat hij een opvliegerig type was. Als Kerry zo had geschreeuwd had niet niet zo lang aandacht gekregen. Maar Dean heeft er ook van geprofiteerd, zegt Bob Zelnick, oud-ABC-correspondent en baas van de journalistiekopleiding van Boston University: "But the same media that played the 'I Have a Scream' speech time and again also gave him the opportunity to come back on the David Letterman show and in the Diane Sawyer interview." Sommige politieke adviseurs zagen het hele process dat zich rond Dean afspeelde als goed en constructief. Bill McInturff, Republikeins opiniepeiler: "A front-runner has to withstand a lot of scrutiny, and he said a lot of stupid things for three or four weeks in a row.
