Vice-president Dick Cheney heeft toegeven dat hij het mikpunt van kritiek is geworden deze campagne. Maar dat is volgens hem geen enkele reden om de tweede plek op de ticket met Bush op te geven: "He's asked me to serve again and I said I'd be happy to do that. And I think that will be the ticket in 2004." Naast zijn kwakkelende gezondheid (cheney kreeg meer dan een hartaanval in de afgelopen vier jaar), zou ook het gedoe rond de contracten die zijn oude bedrijf Halliburton in Irak kreeg zonder openbare aanbesteding, reden kunnen zijn om Cheney van het ticket te verwijderen. Maar Bush wil hem houden. Cheney: " He's decided he wants me to run again. He's a very artful persuader. He persuaded me in 2000 I should give up my private interests and sign on, and I've loved working for him, and he's asked me to serve again, and I plan to do exactly that. Obviously, if a health question came up or something like that, clearly if I thought that I couldn't do what he needs to have done, then I'd be the first to recommend that he gets somebody else. […] I hear about those kinds of charges and claims from our opponents. I imagine they'll continue to make them all during the course of the campaign, but that's not what this election is about."
Volgens een peiling van Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland zou 32 procent van de Republikeinen willen dat president Bush minister van buitenlandse zaken Colin Powell kiest als running mate en maar 24 procent wil dat Bush Cheney aanhoudt.
