Clinton schrijft Bartlet

Berichten zoals de volgende behoren tot mijn favoriete politieke nieuws. Nieuws waarin feit en fictie vloeiend in elkaar overlopen. In The West Wing (mijn favoriete tv-serie op dit moment) krijgt het karakter Josh Lyman, de deputy chief of staff van het Witte Huis van president Bartlet, een briefing over bezuinigingen bij defensie, waarbij de fictieve generaal meldt dat de militaire basis Fort Drum in de staat New York als eerste op de nominatie staat om ontmanteld te worden.
Daarop zijn de echte Democratische senator Hillary Clinton en Republikeinse afgevaardigde John McHugh, beide de staat New York vertegenwoordigend, in actie gekomen. Zij hebben een brief geschreven naar het fictieve karakter Josh Lyman, waarin zij verzoeken de basis niet te sluiten: "As members of the Senate and House Armed Services Committees who also have the honor of representing Fort Drum, we want to make sure that such a recommendation doesn't make it into another West Wing scene. It is important that all White House advisers have the most current information to respond to such flawed proposals for the future of U.S. military facilities."
Het Witte Huis van president Bartlet neemt "all facts into consideration" voordat men tot een uiteindelijke beslissing komt.
