Associated Press vroeg aan de verschillende campagnes om de standpunten van de kandidaten over een aantal verschillende onderwerpen. De Bush- en Sharpton-campagne reageerden niet. Waarom niet, dat werd niet bekend gemaakt, maar ze zullen vast "moverende" reden hebben. Ik gok op tijdgebrek, al mag je dat nooit als argument gebruiken tegen de pers. De pers is namelijk het centrum van het universum (vindt men zelf) dus daar moet je altijd tijd voor hebben. Ik vertrouw er dan ook op dat de niet-antwoordende kandidaten een andere smoes hebben gebruikt.
Onderwerp was dit keer het energiebeleid. Drie Democraten hadden daar de volgende mening over: John Edwards (ik laat hem er toch maar bij staan. Hij heeft het antwoord toch al gegeven): "The first step to achieving energy independence is improving our fuel efficiency and using more homegrown renewable fuel. Beyond that, tapping more domestic fuel reserves, particularly natural gas, is an important step. We should obtain these reserves in a way that is sensitive to our environment, especially our greatest natural treasures. I will never drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and I will continue the moratorium on new drilling leases off our coasts." John Kerry: "I believe renewable and efficient technologies can create good jobs in design, manufacturing, construction and will reduce our dependence on Mideast oil. I support energy development on our public lands where such development can proceed in an economically sound way, and without negatively impacting the environment. I oppose opening the Arctic Refuge to oil and gas exploration and I support existing moratoria on exploration off the coast of New England, California and other parts of America. I support the development of gas reserves on Alaskas North Slope and the construction of a pipeline to carry that gas to market. In addition, I support oil and gas development in the Gulf of Mexico on areas already open for drilling." Dennis Kucinich: "I strongly oppose any increase in drilling for oil and natural gas. I do not believe these bring us closer to energy self-sufficiency. In fact, I believe that our current administration's steadfast reliance on fossil fuels does nothing except drive this country further into an energy debt. What we need to do is vigorously pursue so-called "alternative" energy sources-hydrogen, solar, wind, ocean, geothermal, and others we've not yet discovered. These are the energy sources of the future. Not only will these wean us from dwindling fossil fuel supplies, they will also reduce the extent to which Middle Eastern oil fields loom as potential strategic or military targets." Kortom: weinig verschillen. De Democraten zijn voor het verder ontwikkelen van alternatieve energiebronnen en tegen een te grote afhankelijkheid van olie uit het Midden-Oosten en tegen het boren naar olie in natuurgebieden.
