Twee voormalig presidentskandidaten riepen zondag hun leiders op om er toch vooral een nette presidentscampagne van te blijven maken. Het verzoek kwam uit de monden van Republikein John McCain en Democraat Joe Lieberman. De laatste zei op Fox News Sunday: "Let's keep it civil so we don't get so nasty that we discourage people from coming out and voting in a very important election. Don't say that the opposition is evil. They may be wrong, but they're not evil."
McCain denkt dat de toon van de campagne van invloed zou kunnen zijn op de opkomst in november: "If it stays with this tone -- and it is the tone of the campaigns as much as it is specific words -- if the tone doesn't change, you're going to see low voter turnout, particularly among young Americans. Already, I'm hearing from people here that are saying, 'Look, I'm not even going to vote if this is the way the campaign's going to be conducted."'
