President Bush: "I welcome Senator Edwards on the ticket. The vice president called him earlier this morning, after the announcement was made, to say he welcomed him into the race, as do I. I look forward to a good, spirited contest."

Onze lollige vrienden van het Republican National Committee: "John Kerry was against John Edwards before he was for him. But now he's his running mate. Who is John Edwards? A disingenuous, unaccomplished liberal and friend to personal injury trial lawyers." Een onoprechte liberal die niets gepresteerd heeft? Dat doet weer denken aan de aanvallen op Clinton, de antichrist van de Republikeinse partij. Het moet niet gekker worden.

Gouverneur van Iowa Tom Vilsack, stond ook op de VP-shortlist: "This is going to be an election about the future of our country, going to be an election about how we make America stronger, an election about how we are going to make America better respected around the world. I know of no two greater persons to carry that message to the Democratic team than John Kerry and John Edwards."

Afgevaardigde Dick Gephardt, oud-kandidaat bij de Democraten en ook op de shortlist: "This is a ticket that can excite, motivate and, most importantly, defeat George Bush and Dick Cheney in November. I will continue to work hard for their election and look forward to campaigning with them and for them in the months ahead in our efforts to move America forward."

Oud-gouverneur van Vermont en oud-kandidaat voor de Democratische nominatie Howard Dean, niet op de shortlist: "A Kerry-Edwards ticket will bring energy, commitment and a new vision for America. I will be working hard over the next few months to get them both elected."

Oud-vice-president Al Gore: "This team combines John Kerry's courage and record of outstanding leadership and John Edwards' inspiring struggle on behalf of middle class Americans and those working to reach the middle class."

Marc Racicot, voorzitter van de Bush-Cheney campagne: "I welcome Senator Edwards to the race as Senator Kerry's running mate. Senator Edwards is a committed liberal and spirited messenger for his party in an election that will decide the course our nation takes in turning a recovery into prosperity for all Americans, and in the War on Terror."

Majority leader van de senaat, de Republikeinse senator Bill Frist: "John is a very good senator, and I think will make a very strong vice presidential nominee. I wish him the best of luck. I think John Edwards is a man of high character, strong integrity and will be a very good vice presidential candidate."

Jerry Jasinowski, president van de National Association of Manufacturers, een werkgeversverbond: "Kerry has chosen a running mate ... whose voting record in Congress demonstrates conspicuous hostility to manufacturing and business. As a trial lawyer, Edwards brings to his job an inherent bias against innovation and the American entrepreneurial spirit that is essential to compete and create jobs."

Wallace Edwards, de vader van John Edwards: "It makes us feel real proud and his mother and I are real humble. He's worked hard all his life. He's the type of person America needs in government, because he doesn't have any agenda for himself."
