En daar is hij dan echt. De dokters hebben hem goedgekeurd en na een beetje warmlopen komt hij in het veld: Bill Clinton voert campagne voor en met John Kerry.
Maandag was hij met de Democratische kandidaat in Philadelphia, tot groot genoegen van de toeschouwers en Kerry.
En Clinton heeft er zin in. Het is volgens hem een belangrijke race: "because it is close and because I think it is important and because the differences between the candidates and the courses they will pursue in the next four years are so profound."
En tijdens zijn introductie van John Kerry zei hij, vanzelfsprekend onder luid gejuich: "From time to time I have been called the comeback kid. In eight days John Kerry is going to make America the comeback country."
De Republikeinen zijn niet blij. Clinton is een stemmentrekker, zelfs als hij geen kandidaat is. Dus de spinmachine ging meteen aan het werk om het optreden als een zwaktebod voor Kerry neer te zetten. Dan Bartlett, communicatiechef van het Witte Huis: "The fact that John Kerry's going to have to roll him off the surgery table and onto the campaign trail demonstrates a revealing aspect, that he's underperforming in key parts of his own constituency."
Nee, de Republikeinen zijn niet blij met de van een viervoudige bypass herstelde Clinton.
